There won’t be an app for that

I’d like my computer to let me shape my own tools and agents from capabilities developers provide.

Apple’s platforms are built on “there’s an app for that”. When I have a problem, I find an app, download it, and learn to work the way it wants me to. I can change what I put into it. What it does is mostly someone else’s decision.

LLMs change that. I can describe the behavior I need and build it. A small tool takes an afternoon. When models get fast and reliable enough, a request could produce its own interface on the spot, with controls I can use and change.

Apple should take its OSes in this direction. A malleable operating system, where I can adjust how tools and agents work or make a utility for a need that is mine alone. Something I can do as part of using the computer.

Developers could provide capabilities as tools, building blocks on top of the operating system. I could use them directly, and other tools and agents could use them too. As Alan Kay put it at WWDC in 1990: “We manipulate tools, we manage agents.” An agent pursues my goal and uses tools on my behalf.
