Figures

How this site draws its diagrams, charts, and interactive figures, each one shown with the site's own numbers.

Each figure here is built from the same parts a note or a research entry uses, drawn with the site’s own numbers as of 2026-10-20, and grouped by the job it does. Switch your system to dark mode and every figure follows; on a phone, the line chart, the small multiples, and the instrument change to drawings of their own.

The Palette

Nine swatches with their names and literal values: ink #000000, tone 2 #4F4F4F, tone 3 #7A7A7A, tone 4 #A3A3A3, edge #D9D9D9, surface #F7F7F7, ground #FFFFFF, highlight #FFEB3B, and signal #FF4F00, drawn as a single dot Ink #000000 Tone 2 #4F4F4F Tone 3 #7A7A7A Tone 4 #A3A3A3 Edge #D9D9D9 Surface #F7F7F7 Ground #FFFFFF Highlight #FFEB3B Signal #FF4F00
Every figure is drawn in these nine values. On the page each one becomes a color of the theme, so the drawing turns with dark mode, while the file on its own stays correct in light. Words take #000000, #555555, or #6E6E6E.

Lines

Five line specimens: a rectangle in 1 px ink as an outline, one in 2 px ink as the subject, a 1 px edge grid as context behind a small outlined box, a dashed faint rectangle for what is not yet real, and a faint elbow leader from the word Drawer to a box Outline 1 px ink Subject 2 px ink Context 1 px edge Not yet real 1 px faint, dashed Drawer Leader 1 px faint
Two weights of ink, one context line, one dash, one leader. Strokes keep their width at any scale.

A pipeline

Five numbered steps from left to right: write in Markdown, SCSS, and JavaScript; build with Hugo Extended 0.164.0; output pages, feeds, and a sitemap; deploy on DigitalOcean from main; read at ttvl.co. From the output, each dispatch also leaves as email.html, which Campaign Monitor, outside the site, sends to subscribers 01 Write Markdown, SCSS, JavaScript 02 Build Hugo Extended 0.164.0 03 Output Pages, feeds, sitemap 04 Deploy DigitalOcean, from main 05 Read ttvl.co Email email.html Each dispatch Campaign Monitor Sends it to subscribers
How a page gets from a text file to ttvl.co, and how a dispatch also leaves as email. Steps carry their numbers like the sections of a note.

Shapes for an argument

Five diagrams. A spectrum from a record to an argument with the Log, Research, and Notes along it. A matrix of short to long against often to seldom placing Research, the Log, Notes, and the Flâneur. A cycle from question to progress to finding. Containment: ttvl.co holds Research, which holds Ambient Computing, which holds entry 019. A stack of the studio system's layers: surfaces, the studio brain, Home Assistant, and devices A spectrum A record An argument Log What I made Research What I tried and found Notes What I think A matrix A cycle Containment Often Seldom Short Long Research Log Notes Flâneur Question Progress Finding ttvl.co Research Ambient Computing Entry 019 A stack Surfaces Wall screen, touch panels, phones, Stream Deck Studio brain Model, catalog, and events; serves every screen Home Assistant Devices and the automations that must always work Devices Lamps, sensors, IR blasters, printers
Five shapes a note’s argument can take, filled with the site’s own parts: its sections between a record and an argument, how long and how often they come, the research loop, what holds an entry, and the studio’s layers.

States and transitions

State diagram of a research question: a draft, seen only on the dev server, becomes open when published and listed under Open Questions, then answered when an entry answers it, struck through with its answers inline. While open, other entries can refer to it; once answered, it can take another answer Draft Seen only on the dev server Open Listed under Open Questions Answered Struck through, answers inline Published An entry answers it Other entries refer to it Another answer
A research question’s life. A state that isn’t real yet is dashed; a loop is something that can happen without changing the state.

A sequence of messages

Sequence diagram with three lanes, the phone, the studio brain, and the wall screen. Sizes to scale

Three film frames drawn at the same scale with their measures: 35mm at 36 by 24 mm, 6×7 at 70 by 56 mm, and 4×5 at 127 by 102 mm, with a 50 mm scale bar 36 mm 24 mm 35mm 70 mm 56 mm 6×7 127 mm 102 mm 4×5 0 50 mm
Three film formats at one scale, 2 px to the millimetre, each with its dimension lines; 6×7 at its nominal size. The same drawing would compare paper sizes or the notebook’s 95 × 171 mm page.

Side by side in columns

Grouped columns for 2021 to 2026, Flâneur dispatches in gray beside notes in ink: dispatches 3, 2, 1, 2, 5, 4; notes 0, 0, 0, 1, 5, 10 3 2021 2 2022 1 2023 2 1 2024 5 5 2025 4 10 2026 Flâneur dispatches Notes

On one scale over time

Two step lines counting up from 2021 to 2026: Flâneur dispatches rise steadily from 0 to 17; notes stay at 1 or 2 until 2025, then climb to 17 by 2026-10 5 10 15 20 0 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 Flâneur dispatches Notes 17

Year by year

One bar per year from 2019 to 2026, each split into long, medium, and short Log months.
